There is a world of difference, ‘though between a good and mediocre music teacher. So how do you find the best for your needs?
1. First ask yourself, do you really like your teacher as a person? Taking lessons from someone you get on well with personally will make you much more likely to want to stick with the course. beginners often find reasons to give up their quest without much struggle so. Don’t let indifference to your teacher be your first reason to throw in the towel.
2. Does he design music lesson plans? A good teacher will think carefully about the exact needs of his pupil at every lesson. If feel your piano lesson is ‘made up on the spot’ rather than carefully prepared then you are not getting full value.

3. What is your teacher’s long term experience in giving music lessons? Piano lessons for adults and the piano lessons children need can be worlds apart. Don’t be afraid to ask about your teacher’s past success rate with pupils.
4. Is the style of teaching they offer really what you are seeking. There are many great teachers for classical sytle that do not have the faintest idea about how to teach jazz or popular styles. Decide on how you would like to be able to play and then ask to ‘audition’ your teacher to be sure they can deliver the teaching you want.

5. Do they effectively show you how to play piano? Many piano teachers will only cover what’s in the exam syllabus. They’ll teach you what’s in the book but you’ll still not be able to play much of what you want to play. Your teacher should show you WHY you play something, not just how. Then you’ll understand music from the inside out and be able to play anything.
6. Can they show you how to improvise? Playing music off the written page is only half of the skill of being a musician. When you learn the apparent ‘miracle’ of instant composition that is improvisation then you can truly say you understand music. The truth is it is not a miracle at all but a skill that can be taught and learned like any other. The vast majority of classical piano teachers do not have the faintest idea about how to improvise even though the great composers such as Bach and Mozart considered this to be an essential skill. Ask your teacher to make up music on the spot and see what they can do.
